Tributes pour in for much-loved Hamilton primary school head teacher

A Hamilton primary school has paid tribute to their head teacher who passed away suddenly.

St Ninian’s Primary School were devastated by the death of head teacher Margaret Anne Kennedy after a short illness.

Ms Kennedy, 59, had been the head teacher at St Ninian’s for over 14 years, and left a lasting impression on many pupils past and present.

Acting head teacher Kirsteen White said she will be remembered with great affection. She said: “As our head teacher, friend and colleague, Margaret Anne was a much-loved and highly-respected member of St Ninian’s School community.

“She was in post as head teacher at St Ninian’s for 14 years, joining us from St Leonard’s Primary, and she was held in the highest regard by all whose life she touched.

“She led our school with kindness, good humour and dedication to the wellbeing of all.

“Margaret Anne is remembered by her many pupils past and present for her unfailing commitment to providing the best possible experiences for each child as part of our family at school.

“Margaret Anne loved to accompany children on their educational residential outings, and it gave her enormous pleasure to see the children aspire, using their gifts and talents to achieve personally and academically.

“Margaret Anne’s love of faith, family and friends as well as the pleasure she got from her teaching career has left an indelible impression on all who knew her.

“She will be remembered with great affection, respect and admiration and will always hold a very cherished place in the heart of St Ninian’s.

“She received so much joy as the head teacher of St Ninian’s and her spirit will live on through the pupils, staff and the wider school community.

“We will miss her greatly. May her soul rest in peace.”

Ms Kennedy passed away on April 19.

Fiona Maguire and Claire Taylor, co-chairs of St. Ninian’s parent council, said: “We were all shocked and saddened by Ms Kennedy’s passing and our thoughts and prayers are with her family.

“Her funeral mass was a fitting tribute and a wonderful celebration of her life. She was a huge presence in the school over so many years, and will be sorely missed by the many families whose lives she touched.”

Stewart Nicolson, head of education at South Lanarkshire Council said: “This is a sad time for Margaret Anne’s family and the St Ninian’s Primary School community.

“Margaret Anne was a highly respected head teacher who spent most of her teaching career in South Lanarkshire.

“The sentiments from Ms Kirsteen White, the acting head teacher at the school, provide a very fitting tribute and reflects how we all feel about Margaret Anne’s passing.”
