Tributes pour in for 'lovely' West Lothian 22-year-old after tragic death at quarry

The young man who tragically died at a West Lothian quarry this week has been named locally as James Mighton.

Friends and family of the 22-year-old have released heartfelt tributes to him after he lost his life in an accident at Parkley Fishery near Linlithgow.

Emergency services had been called to the area in the early hours of the morning on Wednesday (June 1) to try and save James, however he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Calls had been made to the police at around 2.20am, however officers have confirmed the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Reacting to the devastating news, friends of James today (Thursday) launched a fundraiser to try and support his family with the funeral costs, reports the Record.

Describing their friend as a "cheeky" and "lovely" young man, the fundraiser for James was quickly inundated with donations, raising over half its target in just a few hours.

A statement on GoFundMe page read: “We want to give James the memorial he deserves, to honour his memory and the send off he deserves.

“I am asking for donations to help James’s family with the cost of his funeral at this sad time. James didn’t have life insurance - what 22 year old young man does? James was a lovely young man.

"He touched the heart of many. He will be sorely missed.”

As the news spread throughout the community, tributes have also appeared online for James, with one friend writing on social media:

“Still can’t believe this. Rest easy James bro. You will be sadly missed.”

Another said: “Rip Jimbo.”

A third posted: “Always had that wee cheeky mischievous smile.”

While a fourth added: “James was a lovely boy and will be missed by many.”

Police Scotland confirmed they were called to the scene in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

A force spokesperson said: "The body of a 22-year-old man was recovered from water near Parkly Place, Linlithgow around 2.20am on Wednesday, 2 June, 2021.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal in due course."
