Tributes pour in for Lanarkshire mum who died after taking unwell at bus stop

A Lanarkshire teenager has paid tribute to ‘the best mum ever’ after her tragic, unexpected death.

Carol McKinnon, from Cathkin, was on her way home from work when she took unwell at a bus stop and was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Doctors discovered the 41-year-old had a brain bleed and she tragically passed away a few days later on Sunday, June 19.

Carol’s sudden death has left her loved ones heartbroken, and 14-year old son Reece McKinnon has declared her ‘the best mum ever’.

Reece, who also lost his dad four years ago, told Lanarkshire Live: ”My mum was the life and soul at every party. She made the party a party.

“She was so fun and vibrant and was always helping people. She never bought much for herself, but always things for me and my sister. She loved her kids more than herself. She was the best mum ever. She was just a star.”

Carol’s family have set up a fundraising page to help with funeral costs, but any leftover money will go to Reece and big sister, Alisha, 20.

Tributes to Carol have been posted all over social media and several shops in the area are also helping to raise funds.

Recalling the events leading to Carol's untimely death, her nephew, Jay McGall, said: “Aunt Carol didn’t have any symptoms or anything. She just walked to the bus stop to go to work and had a seizure when she was waiting.

“We were having a family dinner when we got the call that she had been taken to the hospital.

“She had another seizure once she was there and the doctors did tests and found she had a bleed in the brain.

“They moved her to the ICU and told us she only had a day.”

Devastated Jay added: “It’s one of the worst things that could have happened to us. You feel powerless, she was more of a big sister than an aunty to me.

“We had such a great relationship and I know that she would want us all to be happy.”

Carol had previously chosen to donate her organs and the family hopes that this act will be able to save someone else’s life.

Jay continued: “We still don’t know what caused it. The fact that an aneurysm just happened so quickly, it’s like a ticking time bomb and people need to be screened regularly for things like that.

“It was horrible. It was hard for me, but I can’t even imagine how hard it is for the kids. The strength they’ve shown is amazing and I’m so proud of them.

“Reece and Alisha lost their dad four years ago as well. They’ve been through hell. They want people to know about how great their mum was. Everyone loved her. We’re so grateful, we’ve been getting donations from people that we don’t even know.

"We’ve been getting messages from so many people as well."

For anyone wishing to donate, they can via the family's fundraising page.
