Tributes pour in for Kerry native Noel O’Connell following his death in New York

Tributes have been pouring in for Kerry native Noel O’Connell following his death in New York.

Described as 'an absolute gentleman who made a huge impression on everyone he met', Noel moved to the Big Apple with his family when he was just five years old and was heavily involved in New York GAA.

They said in a statement: "New York GAA is deeply saddened by the passing of Noel O’Connell. A passionate Gael originally from Cahersiveen, Kerry. Noel left a lasting impression on the entire New York GAA and Rockland community. May he Rest In Peace."

NYPD Gaelic Football also paid tribute to "a great teacher of Gaelic Football".

They tweeted: "Our deepest sympathy to the family of Noel O’Connell. He coached many of our players throughout the years and was a great teacher of Gaelic Football. Rest In Peace Noel #Keeptheheritagealive."

Twitter user Irish Voice Gaelic Park posted: "The greatest man I ever knew. Rest In Peace Noel O’Connell. Your passion for the game was only matched by your passion for life."

Shane Durkin added: "RIP Noel, you will be sorely missed. Condolences to Eileen, Maeve and extended family. A Rockland and Kerry legend."

Noel was born in Cahersiveen in 1959 before moving to the Bronx with his family. He coached GAA teams in Rockland County and helped numerous Irish people find employment and somewhere to stay after they emigrated to New York.

Many more people paid tribute to him on Facebook.

One user said: "So sorry to hear about Noel's passing. A true Gael. Never forgot the Kingdom. Rest in peace my friend."

Another posted: "Heartbroken to say the least. What a gent."

Someone else added: "May he Rest In Peace - such a gentleman."

Another person commented: "Sad news, a great GAA man RIP Noel."
