Tributes pour in for 'gentle and wonderful' man after tragic incident on M11 in Co Wicklow

Tributes have poured in for a "gentle and wonderful" man after an incident on the M11 on Saturday.

Declan 'Dec' Shannon sadly passed away after a tragic incident at Barndarrig, Co Wicklow.

Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene at the flyover between Jack Whites pub and The Beehive at around 11.45am, but despite best efforts, the 67-year-old was pronounced dead a short time later.

His body was brought to Loughlinstown hospital, and a section of the M11 remained closed until 6.15pm that evening.

Mr Shannan, who has been reposing at McCrea's Funeral Homes, Dublin Road, Wicklow Town, will be laid to rest on Thursday.

Removal will take place to McCrea's Cremation Chapel in the adjoining building for Cremation Service at 11am.

A funeral notice reads: "beloved husband to Bernie Slattery. Father to Fiona and Stephen, son of Sean and Maeve Shannon (Deceased, Sandyford, Dublin)

"Dearly missed by Siblings Maureen, Paul, Ray, Anne, David and Jean plus respective brothers, sisters and partners in law Mary, Anna, Shane and Debbie. Fiona's husband Shane and Stephen's partner Sarah.Grandson Richie, and grandaughter Aoife, Step Daughters Angie and Jenny plus respective husbands John and Marty,step Grand children Lucie, Ivy, Jude, Reuben and Jonah,brothers in law Tommy, Liam, Pat and Paul plus respective wife's Eileen, Anne, Helen and Susan, all nieces, nephews, relatives and friends."

Tributes have poured in for Mr Shannon, who was described as "one lovely man".

Sharing their condolences with the family, one person wrote: "My deepest condolences to Bernie and all the Shannon family for your loss. Declan was a kind, Gentle and wonderful man who touched many peoples hearts on his life journey. May he rest in peace."

A second said: "So sorry for ur loss Bernie condolences to you and ur family thinking of ye at this very sad time. One lovely man god rest ur soul may you get the best bed in heaven lord to mercy on him R I P Declan".

"Bernie, our hearts are breaking for you with the death of Dec. What a kind and gentle person he was. I know he will be enormously missed by you,his family,friends and his beautiful step grandchildren who loved him very much. Sleep easy now dearest Dec," wrote a third.

While a fourth said: 'My deepest condolences are with Bernie and all of Dec's family right now at this incredibly sad time. Dec was a gentleman and I have nothing but fond memories of the times spent with him. He'll be sorely missed. Sleep tight,Dec."
