Starting at the Bangor's youth team, he went on to become youngest player to ever captain Arsenal before managing the team from 1976 to 1983, during which time he won the FA Cup for the Gunners.

Arsenal said in a statement: "It was with great sadness that the club learned of the death of former manager and captain, Terry Neill, aged 80.

"Terry was associated with the club for over 20 years, firstly as a player having joined us as a 17-year-old from Bangor City in his native Northern Ireland in December 1959.

"The midfielder's combination of tenacity, vision and natural leadership soon forced him into first-team reckoning, making his debut against Sheffield Wednesday on December 23, 1960. Just two years later, aged 20, he was appointed Arsenal's youngest ever captain by new boss Billy Wright.

"Terry Neill's status as both club captain and manager made him a major influence on 20th-century Arsenal. His fantastic contribution - and indeed his character - will always be appreciated by everyone associated with the club.

"Our thoughts are with Terry's family and close friends at this difficult time."

Tributes have been paid for the former Northern Ireland player who achieved so much and garnered so much respect in the world of football.

Former NI goalkeeper Pat Jennings said that Terry had a huge influence on his career having played with him at Arsenal and under him when he was manager of Spurs.

He said: "He was a great man and a massive influence on my career right from joining the Northern Ireland team back in 1964.

"Terry brought me to Arsenal where he gave me two four-year contracts, and he was also my manager at Spurs.

"We enjoyed many memorable moments together including four Cup finals - two FA Cups and a European decider. I'm indebted to Terry for the assistance and support he gave me during my career."

North Down MP Stephen Farry said: "Very sad at the death of Terry Neill. Yet another highly respected person with deep roots in Bangor who passed away this week having achieved so much - this time in the sporting world with Arsenal and Northern Ireland."

East Belfast MLA Robin Newton said: "Saddened to learn of the passing of Northern Ireland and Arsenal football legend Terry Neill. Earning 44 caps for Northern Ireland and 275 appearances for Arsenal, a football management and media career he gained much respect."

Terry is survived by his wife Sandra, two daughters and four grandchildren.
