Warm tributes have been paid to former North Lanarkshire councillor Neil McCallum, who has died aged 75.
Councillor McCallum was one of the authority’s original elected members when it was first formed in 1996, representing the Cumbernauld ward of Seafar & the Village as an SNP representative for 11 years.
He was a librarian and had been second-in-charge at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow; and was also a Burns enthusiast and a life member and former assistant secretary of Cumbernauld bowling club.
Councillor McCallum’s colleagues from the SNP group in Cumbernauld called him “a very kind and much-loved person”.
They said: “We recall fondly that he was number two at the Mitchell Library, as well as being a member of Cumbernauld bowling club in the Village.
“Neil was passionate about Burns and was a very active member of Cumbernauld Burns club; he was a past president of Cumbernauld Rostrum Club and lived in Cumbernauld Village for many years.
“He was a well-liked and popular SNP councillor, having served from 1996 to 2007. We all send our condolences to his family and friends.”
North Lanarkshire SNP group leader Jordan Linden added: “Neil served as a councillor for over a decade, and in particular represented with passion the area of Cumbernauld.
“On behalf of the wider SNP, not only in North Lanarkshire but beyond, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends – our thoughts are with them all at this time.”
