Tributes pour in for Dom Manfredi after retirement confirmation

Stars of Wigan's past and present have heaped praise on Dom Manfredi after they confirmed his retirement from the sport.

The winger confirmed that he would retire with immediate effect after a persisting knee injury resulted in medics advising him to hang up the boots.

Manfredi, just 27, had planned to retire at the end of the season, but has decided to call time on his career now after three knee reconstructions.

Despite that, Manfredi's influence will not be forgotten, with the speedster scoring a stack of memorable tries for the club during his time on the field, most notably scoring twice in the 2018 Grand Final victory.

The news saw messages of praise and support in their hundreds, with a number of team-mates also paying tribute.

"Great player and even better bloke," current Wigan forward Ollie Partington said on Twitter.

Warriors halfback Jackson Hastings added: "Privileged to say I got to take the field with you lad, all the best in the next phase."

Others took to Instagram to show their appreciation, with John Bateman simply saying: "Some man," with a montage of Manfredi.

"One of the very best," Sam Tomkins added on his account, while legendary captain Sean O'Loughlin also showed a simple sign of respect by posting three clapping emojis.

Manfredi will get to say his farewell to the fans on Friday, when he leads the team out for the game with Salford Red Devils.

After the news broke, he took to Twitter himself.

He tweeted: "Gutted not to be finishing up on my terms but It wasn’t meant to be. Thank you to everyone who’s supported me & had an impact on my career I’ll be forever grateful."
