Tributes pour in for American TV legend who has died aged 89

American actress Elizabeth Hubbard has died at the age of 89, her son has announced in a moving tribute to the TV icon. Jeremy Bennett shared the sad news that the star of soap opera As the World Turns had passed away over the weekend.

Jeremy took to Facebook to give thanks to his soap legend mother, who played Lucinda Walsh on the show. He wrote: "I'm sorry to say with a broken heart my mum passed over the weekend."

He shared: "Thank you for being an unmovable rock that guided me through life. I will try to honour your memory for as long as I live. Love & Prayers. Jeremy."

Elizabeth's performances on the long-running soap led to her winning a number of awards as well as bagging 11 Daytime Emmy nominations in her illustrious career, reports the Mirror.

Eight of them came from her role as Lucinda in the psychological drama, which followed a group of professionals in a small Illinois town. played the role from 1984 until the last season in 2010. As the World Turns, which ran from 1956, has the longest total running time of any television show.

Director Maria Wagner Dormen told her son: "Your mom was the best! I loved working with her and I loved her. It was always fun and interesting to be around her. She was as so complex. Sending you my sympathy and best wishes."

The New York-born actress also won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Daytime Series in 1974 for her role as Dr Althea Davis in the daytime soap The Doctors. On the big screen she starred in movies including The Bell Jar, I Never Sang For My Father and Cold River.

One fan Alan Locher tweeted: "It is with great sadness that I share the news that the legendary Elizabeth Hubbard passed away over the weekend. You will be missed dear, Liz. Rest in peace!"

Writer Michael Logan said: "RIP Emmy winner Elizabeth Hubbard. A magnificent star whose work was so grand and impulsive and unruly that each performance felt like an unauthorized event. Althea Davis on The Doctors. Lucinda Walsh on As the World Turns. An incalculable loss to the acting profession."

And journalist and producer Michael Fairman wrote: "One of the all-time greats to ever grace the genre. I am heartbroken to learn of her passing. Liz was magnificent."
