Tributes pour in for 100-year-old Mayo woman from popular family who died 'peacefully'

Tributes have been pouring in for a 100-year-old Mayo woman from a popular family who passed away peacefully.

Lena Cunningham (nee Hyland) of Charles Street, Castlebar died peacefully at her home residence on March 4.

Heartfelt condolences have attributed the centenarian as both a "lovely lady" and "gentle soul."

One tribute said: "Sincere sympathy to the Cunningham family on the sad passing of Lena. A long life well lived. She was a loyal friend to my late mother."

Lena was from a popular family in Castlebar and had been involved in the licensed trade for a long time.

She is deeply regretted by her dear family and is predeceased by her husband Ned and her son Eamonn.

She recently celebrated her 100th birthday, receiving a cheque and letter in the post from President Michael D Higgins in recognition of her remarkable milestone achievement.

Another tribute said: "I remember her as a very lovely lady growing up in Castlebar on Thomas Street" adding: "May she rest in peace after a life well lived."

Reposing to take place at Coady's Funeral Home, Castlebar, Monday March 6 from 5.30pm to 7pm, with removal on Tuesday morning at 11am.

Requiem Mass to be held at 12 noon in Keelogues Church, with Lena to be laid to rest after in Keelogues Cemetery.

Another tribute said: "She was such a lovely lad. May she rest in peace."
