Tributes pour in as young man tragically killed after falling from cliff in Cork is named locally

The young man who was tragically killed after falling through a blowhole near Garretstown, Cork has been named locally as Conor King.

The 23-year-old, who studied engineering and biomedical science in MTU, was on a camping trip with friends on Saturday when he accidentally fell 50ft through the hole late in the evening.

Mr King, from Douglas, was recovered by rescue divers while a friend of his suffered suspected hypothermia trying to save him.

Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene and was removed to CUH where a post-mortem was due to take place.

His friend was also taken to the hospital and treated for his injuries.

Speaking after the incident occurred, a garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí attended the scene of an incident in Kinsale, Co. Cork yesterday evening, Saturday 24th April 2021.

"Local Fire Services and the Coast Guard also attended the scene. A male, aged in his 20s, was recovered from the water by rescue divers at Garretstown.

"He was pronounced dead at the scene and the Coroner was notified.

"His body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place.

"Investigations are ongoing."

MTU's Head of Student Affairs, Dr Dan Collins, has sent his condolences to Conor King's family and friends, saying they're in the thoughts of everyone associated with the university.

He said: "Our thoughts are with Conor’s family to whom we offer our deepest sympathy, and with his friends, as well as his classmates at MTU and colleagues in the Department and at the Faculty.

"We will continue to keep Conor’s family in our thoughts as well as the other young man currently recovering."

The Seven Heads/Old Head Coast Guard, gardai, fire services, and National Ambulance Service were all part of the large operation that also saw a rescue helicopter deployed before being stood down.

The Maritime Rescue Centre based in Valentia was also involved during the rescue operation.
