Tributes pour in as popular Irish dad killed in Louth car and lorry crash named locally

Tributes have been flooding in for a popular Irish dad who died in a horror crash in Co Louth.

Paul Sheelan tragically passed away after the car he was driving collided with a lorry on the R173 between Loughanmore and Jenkinstown.

The heartbreaking incident happened at around 2.15pm on Tuesday.

Mr Sheelan was airlifted to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, where he died a short time later.

The road remains closed on Wednesday morning while Garda Forensic Collision Investigators are at the scene.

Local GAA club St Patrick's GFC Lordship shared the tragic news of Mr Sheelan's passing on social media on Tuesday.

They wrote last night: "It's with great sadness that we’ve learned of the tragic passing of Paul Sheelan RIP in a traffic accident this eve. Paul was ever-present on various backroom teams over the years and was an extremely proud and committed Pats man. Please keep his wife Praima, son Peter and extended family in your thoughts and prayers.

"Ar dheis De go raibh ar a ainm."

While Louth GAA also said they were "deeply saddened" by the tragedy.

The club wrote on Facebook: "All at Louth GAA are are deeply saddened to learn of the sad and untimely death of St Patricks GFC clubman, Paul Sheelan.

"We extend our deepest condolences to Paul’s family, friends and all at St.Patricks GFC at this extremely difficult time.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam."

Meanwhile Gardai are also appealing for anyone who was in the Loughanmore and Jenkinstown areas at the time of the fatal collision to come forward.

A spokeswoman said: "The R173 is currently closed between Dundalk and Carlingford and local diversions are in place. The scene is preserved for Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.

"Gardaí are appealing for anyone who may have information in relation to this collision to contact them, including anyone who was driving in the Loughanmore and Jenkinstown areas between 1.45pm and 2.30pm.

"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Dundalk Garda Station on 042 9388 400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station."
