Tributes pour in as legendary Dublin publican Tommy Smith passes away

Tributes have been pouring in for hugely popular Dublin publican Tommy Smith, who sadly died this morning.

Tommy, the co-owner of Grogan’s on William Street, passed away peacefully this morning surrounded by his loved ones, the pub’s Facebook page posted today.

Hundreds of friends have taken to social media to pay their respects to the “thorough gentleman” who was well known for his wit, good humour. and his deep knowledge of the arts.

Tanya Leah Maher wrote: "I’m so sorry to hear this. I had many a laugh and a pint in his company. Sad loss. My condolences to you all xxx.”

Andrew Markou said: “Oh my God, I’m so sorry to hear this and may he rest in peace and my condolences go out to anyone and everyone that was close to him and his family.

“I’ve been to Ireland four times and Grogan’s is my favourite pub in central Dublin and I’ve had many of conversations with him and even bought a few pieces of art off him.

“His knowledge on poets etc was outstanding. A true gentleman and he was always funny humorous and humble. Rest in peace Tommy from your distant friend Andrew from Birmingham U.K.”

Another pal added: “I'm so sorry to hear this, deepest sympathies to Donal and all Tommy's family and friends. He was such a brilliant, caring, clever man and he minded so many of us over the years. A great supporter of artists, a good, good man. Go well Tommy.”

More spoke of his friendly nature and brilliant mind. One said: “RIP. An absolute gentleman - cultured, friendly, tolerant. One, among many, reasons why you would go in to Grogans.”

Another penned: “Such sad news, love to his family and friends.

“Tommy IS Grogans to me, he's been behind the bar there since I was a kid. A cheese toastie and a pint and a chat with Tommy were great medicine.”

Rest in Peace Tommy - a true Dublin legend.
