  • Gabriel Muresan, a former Romania international footballer and the current mayor of Apold, has died at the age of 44 after drowning in a lake near his town.
  • Muresan earned nine caps for the Romanian national team between 2007 and 2011, participating in World Cup and European Championship qualifiers against notable teams such as France and Brazil.
  • His most successful club career was with CFR Cluj, where he captained the team and secured three Romanian league titles (2008, 2010, 2012) and three domestic cups during his six-year tenure from 2007 to 2013.
  • He also featured in three UEFA Champions League group-stage campaigns with Cluj, playing against major European clubs including Chelsea, Manchester United, and Roma.
  • Tributes have been issued by the Romanian Football Federation, UEFA, and the Apold public authority, with the latter describing him as “a devoted servant of our community” since he became mayor in 2020.
