Tributes pour in as 'brave' Limerick schoolboy tragically passes away

Tributes have poured in for a "fantastic" Limerick teen who tragically passed away earlier this week.

Talented footballer Rian O'Halloran from Limerick city died at home on Tuesday.

The youngster was captain of the U16 team at local club Shelbourne AFC, and an emotional tribute was paid by Shelbourne's Chairman Tony Cusack, who said the "brave" youngster will be "dearly missed".

He wrote earlier this week: "This is one message I never wanted to post. Our fantastic U16s captain, Rian O'Halloran, lost his brave battle earlier today. As his Dad Ray has said, he is at rest now. Rian played with the club from a young age and was part of a very talented group of players. Rian was widely regarded not just within the club but across the local football and sporting community.

"He received numerous awards and represented the LDSL In the Kennedy Cup. He was a tough tackling centre back with a natural footballing brain. He was a born leader and was an absolute gentleman with a wonderful warm smile. Rian also excelled at rugby and he played with St Mary's RFC.

"He was a great , loyal member of our club and will be dearly missed by everybody who knew him. He was an avid Liverpool supporter and was thrilled when they won the Premier League. Rest assured Rian.."You will never walk alone"."

While Rian's school St Clement’s College said the teen was a "fantastic student and friend".

They added: "It is with great shock and sadness that we inform you of the passing of Transition Year pupil Rian O’Halloran. Rian was a fantastic student and friend to all who knew him.

"He represented the school on and off the sports pitches with courage and pride, two characteristics he modelled to all who he met. He will be missed dearly by all here in St Clement’s College."

Rian was laid to rest in Mount St. Lawrence Cemetery after a funeral service at St. John's Cathedral on Thursday.
