Tributes pour in after 'cheeky chappy' who was the face of a local chippy dies

Heartbroken customers at a popular chippy have paid tribute to the “cheeky chappy” who welcomed customers for 15 years.

Levers Fish and Chips in the Tommyfield Market building on Albion Street, Oldham, announced that 78-year-old Michael Soloman had tragically passed away.

Adele Clayton, manager at the store, said: “He was definitely a character, all the customers loved him, he was definitely well-known.

“We’re like a family here, it’s a massive loss.

“He had a stroke and a heart attack only a matter of weeks before the first lockdown and there are still people asking after him now.

“He loved all the kids, always had time for them and would give them a lollipop when they were leaving - he always had one in his top pocket.

“He was the face of Levers, it’s a different place without him - a lot quieter.”

Mr Soloman, a grandfather-of-five, started working in the shop alongside his brother-in-law and one of the directors, George Gabrilatsou, after he retired.

Originally from Cyprus, he moved to England when he was just a child, spending most of his life in the UK.

Before his retirement, Mr Soloman had a long career in the hospitality industry, working his way up to owning two establishments in Wilmslow and Hale Barns.

He passed away last week after a long illness.

His funeral was held at Oldham Crematorium yesterday, December 16, with customers invited to pay their respects.

The firm's announcement of Mr Soloman's death was shared hundreds of times, with dozens of people leaving their favourite memories.

Alison Smith said: "The Levers Legend. A real character and such a lovely man.

"He always remembered me from being young and, last time mum and I visited, gave me a lolly afterwards, even though I was pushing 40 at the time!

"Sending my deepest condolences to all the family."

Hazel Roberts added: "Such a lovely bloke, always made you welcome and chatted to all the customers.

"He must be know by all of Oldham, condolences to the family."

Karen Carlisle said: "Lovely man, had many a conversation with him. Always happy to help.

"A true gentleman. My thoughts are with his family at this sad time."
