Tributes pour in after body found in River Mersey

Tributes have poured in after a man's body was found in the River Mersey.

Emergency services were called to Beechwood Road South near Otterspool Promenade at around 10am on Thursday to reports that a body had been seen in the river.

A witness told the ECHO that he saw someone floating, surrounded by items of clothing, including a jacket and a pair of trousers

Merseyside Police later confirmed that their officers, crews from Merseyside Fire and Rescue and North West Ambulance had been involved in the recovery of a body from the water.

Since the tragic incident, hundreds of tributes and condolences messages have flooded in on social media for the man.

On Facebook, Julie Hayes said: "R. I. P poor guy x Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends xx"

Sue Dave Tague also said: "I hate hearing news like this - so sad. Rest in peace whoever you were. Xxx."

Catherine Pye added: "Very sad affair God bless him xx."

Many people also passed on thoughtful messages to the man's family.

Teresa Anderson  said: "Thoughts & prayers to the family & friends,of this gentleman, R.I.P.xx."

Lisa Rowley  added: "Thought go to his family, so sad."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "Merseyside Police can confirm enquiries are underway following the discovery of a man’s body in the River Mersey near Otterspool this morning (Thursday, 10 October 2019).



"Emergency services were called at around 10am to Beechwood Road South to a report that the body of a man had been seen in the water.

"Officers, Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, Coastguard and North West Ambulance Service attended and the man was removed from the water and pronounced dead.



"At this time the death is being treated as unexplained and a post mortem will be conducted to establish the cause of death.

"Enquiries are ongoing to identify the man and inform next of kin."
