Tributes have been paid to a young Limerick man after he died following a tragic fall while on holiday in Greece.

Darren Whelan, aged in his early 20s, was with a group of friends on the island of Ios when the incident happened on Sunday.

Mr Whelan's GAA club Kildimo Pallaskenry have paid tribute to his "positive and enthusiastic outlook on life" and offered their condolences to his family during this difficult time.

In a post online, the club said: "It is with a very heavy heart that I write this post today, following the tragic and untimely passing of our comrade and fellow Kildimo Pallaskenry GAA club member Darren Whelan

"We extend our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to Darren’s mother Geraldine, father Eddie and brothers Gavin and Eamon and extended family on the loss of their beloved son and brother.

"To all those who knew Darren, as a friend or as a teammate, we offer our condolences and support at this difficult time. Darren had a positive and enthusiastic outlook on life and was an exciting, skilful and popular player who always gave 100% Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

From west Limerick, Mr Whelan was known as a talented hurling and Gaelic football player and his death has deeply touched the local community.

Emmett O'Brien, an Independent Councillor for Adare-Rathkeale, said people were "shocked beyond belief" at the terrible news.

"He had a good life and he was a great kid, it's a terrible tragedy," Councillor O'Brien said.

"My thoughts and sympathies are with his family, I knew him personally very well through GAA and socialising.

"He was a very integral part of the social fabric of the community.

"He was an extraordinarily nice-mannered and friendly young gentleman and there is utter devastation in the parish after his passing."
