Tributes have been paid to a young man killed in a tragic car crash in Co Kilkenny in the early hours of this morning.

Eugene Aylward, 20s, was killed when the car he was driving hit a wall at Knockwilliam, Ballyhale at around 1am on Saturday.

A female passenger in her 30s was removed to University Hospital Waterford with serious injuries.

Local councillor Matt Doran told the Irish Mirror: "The whole area is so saddened by the tragic news, our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole extended family and friends."

Eugene was a member of Ballyhale Shamrocks GAA club, who have postponed all their matches this weekend as a mark of respect to the family.

They wrote on Twitter: "As people will have heard in news bulletins there was a tragic accident in Ballyhale last night, involving a member of our Ballyhale Shamrocks club.

"As a result and as a mark of respect to the family concerned all Shamrocks matches due to have been played this weekend are off.

"Ballyhale Shamrocks GAA extends its deepest condolences to both the Aylward and Cullen families on the devastating loss of their son Eugene.

"As part of our Senior panel Eugene was a very popular young man and a friend to everyone who was lucky enough to have known him."

Gardai are also appealing for any witnesses to the tragic incident to come forward.

A spokesman added: "Anyone with information is asked to contact Thomastown Garda Station 056-7754150 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111."
