Tributes paid to woman 'stabbed by stranger' while heading home for family party

Tributes have been paid to a woman who was allegedly stabbed in broad daylight 'from behind' by an apparent stranger. Johanita Dogbey, from Brixton in London, was heading home to a family party at the time of the brutal attack.

The 31-year-old has been named locally as the victim of the incident which took place at 4pm on Monday May 1. A man allegedly approached her from behind and stabbed her, reports the Mirror.

The Met Police have arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of murder and have reportedly been granted extra time to speak with the man who is in custody after the woman tragically died at the scene. Cops say they do not believe she knew her attacker.

The victim was said to be returning to her home where she lives with her mother, father, brother and sister for a birthday celebration after going to buy a present. Residents say she was on a phone call with her grandmother before her relative heard a "terrible scream" before the phone fell to the ground on Stockwell Park Walk in Lambeth.

Johanita's younger brother Maurice today told MailOnline: "We are trying to understand what has happened and are completely broken.

"As far as we know there was no link between my sister and the attacker. We are waiting to meet with the police to get a full update. This whole thing has left us devastated. It's too much for us."

Her father Yao said: "We have no words at this moment. My daughter was beautiful and kind-hearted. I'm sorry, I can't say anything more."

One resident told the Evening Standard: “I was with her dad at the crime scene. He said his daughter had gone to buy a present for her mother and was on her way home.

“She was on the phone to her grandmother when she was attacked. The grandmother heard a terrible scream and then the phone dropped. The grandmother phoned the dad who then tried to call his daughter’s number but got no answer.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, local policing commander for Lambeth, said: “I am in regular contact with officers leading the investigation into this brutal attack and my thoughts continue to be with the woman's family and friends as they come to terms with this awful news. We will do everything we can to support them at this unimaginably difficult time.

"I recognise that the community will be experiencing worry and considerable concern and we have extra officers out in the community to answer questions and provide a visible presence.

“My police neighbourhood policing teams have visited local community centres and businesses taking on board concerns and to ensure we are having the right conversations with local people at this time.

“I would also ask people to share anything that they feel might help the investigating detectives."

Detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation and have carried out a number of enquiries, including a review of CCTV from the area where the attack occurred. They have also spoken to several witnesses.

Police are continuing to appeal for information and you can share images or footage directly with the investigation team here.

Anyone with information about what happened is asked to call 101 quoting CAD 4728/01May. To remain anonymous contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
