Tributes paid to well loved former teacher

Tributes have been paid to one of South Ayrshire’s oldest residents, Dorothy Sanson, who has sadly passed away aged 105.

Former home economics teacher Dorothy was well known- and well loved- in and around Troon, after moving to the seaside town from Edinburgh in 1952.

Dorothy taught domestic science, as it was known, in local schools and was well respected by her peers.

Back in 2013, at the first meeting of Troon OiR Scrabble Club, held in Portland Church Hall, the leader of the group, Gordon McLennan, had great pleasure in announcing the previous season’s winner- Dorothy.

On that very day Dorothy celebrated her 91st birthday, proving there is no substitute to experience.

Dorothy always loved Scrabble and played regularly with family members and many friends, proving that crosswords and word games really do help to keep the brain cells working.

In her later years, Dorothy lived at Westbank Care Home, Troon.

She put her longevity down to “good genes” and “hard work.”

When she turned 100, Dorothy enjoyed the VIP treatment when she was visited by South Ayrshire Provost Helen Moonie with a lovely basket of flowers.

After lunch, Deputy Lord Lieutenant David Dickson also presented Dorothy with a centenary card from Her Majesty The Queen.

Dorothy was a beloved wife to the late Jim, mother to Alistair, Norman and Mary and a grandmother and great grandmother.

Her funeral  was held at Holmsford Bridge Crematorium, Dreghorn on Wednesday, December 11.

Dorothy’s family would like to thank all the staff at Westbank Care Home for their wonderful care and attention.
