Tributes paid to ‘true gentleman’ as man killed in Donegal three-car crash named

Tributes have poured in for a man killed in a crash in Co Donegal.

Mervyn McClure, 70s, died after he was involved in a three-car collision on the N13 Newtowncunningham to Letterkenny Road around 10.50pm on Tuesday.

He was taken from the scene to Letterkenny Hospital but was later pronounced dead. Another man aged in his 40s was taken to the same hospital, where he was treated for injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

The local community and friends have offered up their sympathies to Mervyn’s family, describing him as a “true gentleman”.

They said: “Shocked and saddened to hear this sad news today about Mervyn's passing. My condolences to the McClure and extended family. May his soul rest in peace.”

A second said: “Condolences to all the McClure family, Mervyn [was] a true gentleman. RIP.”

While a third wrote: “Very sorry to hear of the death of Mervyn, a true gentleman, rest in peace! Condolences to all the family!”

A funeral notice reads: “The death has occurred on Wednesday, 6th July 2022 and as the result of a road traffic accident of Mervyn McClure, Lurgy, Letterkenny. Pre-deceased by his parents Cecil and Isa. Deeply missed by his family, friends and neighbours.”

His remains will be reposing at his brother Derek and sister-in-law Janices’ residence at Knockbrack, Letterkenny, from 7pm until 10pm from 12 noon until 10pm on Thursday.

At 1pm on Friday, the funeral procession will travel via the Lurgy Road going to Ray Presbyterian Church, Manorcunningham for a 2pm service.

Gardai are appealing for information following the fatal crash.

A spokesperson said: “Gardai in Letterkenny are appealing for information following a fatal road traffic collision on the N13 Newtowncunningham to Letterkenny Road, Co. Donegal, Tuesday, July 5, 2022.

“Gardai are appealing to any person who may have witnessed this collision to contact them. Any road users who were travelling in the area with camera (including dash cam) footage is asked to make this available to gardai.”
