Tributes paid to tragic young student killed at popular Scots beauty spot

A young woman who died at a popular Scots beauty spot was a promising rugby player at Stirling University.

Eilidh McNab, 23, passed away despite a frantic bid to rescue her from Bracklinn Falls in Callander, Perthshire, on Thursday.

Her 25-year-old friend was also rescued and escaped injury.

It remains unclear how the pair came to be in the water but it is understood that once in the river Eilidh was dragged about 50 yards downstream by the current into another pool and became trapped under the water.

Her brother, Duncan, took to social media after the tragedy, posting: “My sister Eilidh Rowan McNab died on Thursday in a tragic accident.

“We, as a family, are devastated.”

A major rescue operation was launched after the two women got into difficulty at Bracklinn Falls (PA)

Dad Ian posted: “After the untimely death of our daughter and wee sister, Eilidh Rowan McNab, there is a hole in the soul of our family.”

Police are treating the death as unexplained but not suspicious and a report has been submitted to the fiscal.

A spokesman added: “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.”

Eilidh was a keen rugby player who had played for Stirling University women’s team.

Pals left floral tributes near the scene with a rugby ball included among the tributes.

A major emergency service response was sparked around 11.30am last Thursday after reports of two women experiencing “difficulty” in the water at the popular tourist attraction.

Police, along with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Scottish Ambulance Service, Coastguard and Killin Mountain Rescue Team were in attendance.

The pals were traced and rescued from the water but Eilidh was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Scottish Ambulance Service dispatched a special operations team, an air ambulance, a paramedic response unit and two ambulance crews to the scene and transported a patient to Forth Valley Hospital.

Around a dozen volunteers from Killin Mountain Rescue Team attended.

Team members were at the falls for about three hours during the rescue.

Bracklinn Falls is a series of waterfalls north-east of the town, on the course of the Keltie Water, where the river crosses the Highland Boundary Fault.
