Tributes paid to tragic Glasgow teen killed in 'hit and run' one year on from his death

Tributes have been paid to a teenager from Glasgow who was killed in an alleged hit and run one year on from his tragic death.

Aidan Pilkington was allegedly knocked down on Crow Road in the west end of the city at around 12.20am on Saturday, September 11, 2021.

The 18-year-old was rushed to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital but sadly could not be saved, and was pronounced dead a short time later.

On the anniversary of his death, heartfelt tributes have poured in for the youngster, who worked at McDonald's and was due to move to Dundee to start university just one week after he died.

Broomhill Sports Club posted pictures on their social media of Aidan as a tot decked out in the local strip, and remembered him fondly while sending condolences to his family.

In the Facebook post, they also touched upon the magnitude of their own personal loss. A spokesperson wrote: "We are thinking of Aidan Pilkington and his family today. A year ago we lost a team mate and a friend. RIP Aidan."

In a heartbreaking statement released at the time, the young man's family said: “Aidan was treasured by his family, and well loved and respected by his friends and community.

"Aidan left Hyndland Secondary School in the summer, and was going to be moving to Dundee next Saturday to attend Dundee University.

"He created a bright future for himself and was really looking forward to these opportunities and challenges. It is very cruel that he has been robbed of his life in this way.

"The family would like to thank friends, in particular Aidan’s friends, and the wider community, for their love, support, and kindness."

In July, a former Scots youth footballer appeared in court accused of causing the death of the teenager. Ciaran Dickson, 20, allegedly struck Aidan Pilkington, 18, in Glasgow's Jordanhill in the early hours of September 11, 2021.

The ex-Celtic B team star, of Erskine, Renfrewshire, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and four other charges including failing to stop to give information to police and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Dickson made no plea when he appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court. He was granted bail and his next court date is yet to be determined.
