Tributes paid to tragic dad killed in crash over a decade after his son died the same way

Tributes were paid to a tragic dad yesterday who was killed in a crash over a decade after his son died in the same way.

Peter Galwey, who was the sole occupant of his jeep, was killed instantly after his vehicle veered off the road at 11.20m on Sunday night.

The Kerry man, in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene after the collision at Maglass East in Castleisland.

Garda forensic investigators assessed the area yesterday and appealed to any members of the public who were in the vicinity to provide dashcam footage.

Councillor Charlie Farrelly, who said people were shocked and deeply saddened, added: “I knew Peter well.

“He was an absolutely lovely man, a pure gentleman and it’s the second time tragedy has struck his family after his 21 year-old son Peter Jnr got killed in a road traffic accident in August 2009. It’s a tragedy and my first thoughts are with his wife Breda and his four daughters.”

Peter Jnr, an apprentice electrician, was a passenger in car that struck a wall after taking a left-hand bend, near Lawlor’s Cross, on the N22 Tralee/Killarney road.

The car hit a wall and burst into flames and he and his friend Timothy Reidy, 19, died at the scene.

Cllr Farrelly said of his dad: “He was one of Ireland’s and Castleisland’s greatest gentlemen, he did whatever he could do for his community.

“I’m the chairman of the Castleisland Horse and Pony Racing Association, we’re the oldest horse and pony racing meeting in Ireland and he was one of our longest sponsors.

“He was a quarry business owner in Fahaduff, outside Castleisland and he was very popular and from a well-known family in the area.”
