Tributes paid to teen who died in Lanark water tragedy

Friends and loved ones have paid tribute to the 13-year-old boy who tragically died in open water in Hazelbank, near Lanark on Saturday.

Emergency services rushed to the scene at Hazelbank at around 5.50pm but were unable to save the youngster, named locally as Jamie Gilchrist.

The community has rallied to support Jamie's family through online fundraising on Go Fund Me and to possibly set up a memorial area for the "special boy".

The page is close to reaching its target of £10,000, with more than £8100 raised already.

A post on the page states: "As many of you will now know, on the 24th of July, we tragically lost a special boy from our village.

"An amazing son, to his mum Laura, a brother to his sister Kaitlin, a grandson, a special friend to Will, and his other school friends.

"Will wanted to do something special, to remember him by, so his family can possibly create a memorial area for him and to help and support his bereaved family at this very difficult time."

A police statement at the time of the tragic incident said: “Officers attended following the report of a concern for person in the water at Hazelbank, Lanark.

“A multi-agency operation was launched and a body has been recovered from the river.

“Formal identification has still to take place, but the family of a 13-year-old boy have been made aware.

“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”

Sadly, six people lost their lives in Scottish waters over the weekend as emergency services reminded locals of the dangers of swimming outdoors.
