Tributes paid to Second World War hero Jack Simpson from Dún Laoghaire who died recently

Tributes have been pouring in for a World War II veteran from Dublin who died recently.

Residents and neighbours have been posting their farewells to the "lovely and kind" Jack Simpson, 90s, from Dun Laoghaire who was buried in Mount Jerome on Saturday.

The War hero's full title was Wing Commander Jack Simpson OBE, DSO, DFC. RAF. AFM Rtd.

Jack was an Irishman who served in the Royal Air Force from the Second World War through to the Battle of Britain.

He cheated death on numerous occasions while flying twin-engine Hudson aircrafts in the Coastal Command.

On one occasion, he took a 20mm round bullet into his cockpit while on duty and was hit in the shoulder by a flying shrapnel from the attack but still managed to get his plane back to base and land safely.

Jack was also a hero in other ways outside of the war, caring for and nursing his wife for years as she suffered dementia despite being in his late 80s himself.

One resident noted that: "When he was forced to put her into a nursing home, he visited her every single day until her death. He even brought her home at weekends.

Another added: "So many unsung heroes who were truly brave in their day. May he rest in peace."

A third said: "RIP without your bravery we would not have enjoyed the freedom we have done since the War ended. Thank you for efforts, James.
