Tributes paid to 'sadly missed' deputy headteacher who died after suspected heart attack

Tributes have been paid to the deputy head of a Swansea primary school who has died suddenly.

Helen Barrow, 57, who passed away at Morriston Hospital on Thursday, July 22, is believed to have suffered a heart attack at home.

She had been deputy head at Bishopston Primary School on Gower since the late '90s.

Her husband Trevor, a 54-year-old HGV driver, said: "Everybody's been totally shocked by what's happened.

"And the reaction our family's received has been quite overwhelming.

"I don't think Helen could've ever realised how many people truly cared for her."

He described his wife as a "loving grandmother whose two grandchildren doted on her".

The couple would've been married 28 years next month.

Bishopston Primary School headteacher John Owen said: “Our deepest condolences go to Helen’s family at this dreadful time.

“Helen worked at Bishopston Primary School for many years, she was always regarded as a kind and caring colleague.

“She was loved by pupils past and present and made a real difference to many young lives. Helen will be deeply missed by all connected with our school.”

Helen Morgan-Rees, Swansea Council’s director of education, said: “Our thoughts are with Helen’s family and friends at this time and with the pupils, staff and wider community at Bishopston Primary School where Helen was held in such very high esteem.”

Councillor Lyndon Jones, a governor at the school, said: "Helen was a great servant to the school and will be sadly missed by everyone, including pupils past and present.

"She was a lovely lady who was well respected and that respect was well earned.

"It is always sad news to hear when someone passes away. It was completely unexpected and deeply sad."

A memorial page to Helen on Bishopston Primary School's Facebook page spoke of how popular she was with both pupils and parents alike.

"We loved having you as a teacher," read one comment.

"You have been an inspiration to so many children."
