Tributes paid to Rochdale aid worker who died in Mozambique car crash

Tributes have been paid to a 'selfless' and 'humble' aid worker from Rochdale who died in an overseas car crash.

Basharat Hussain lost his life when the car he was travelling in smashed into a stationary vehicle in Mozambique.

Another local charity worker lost his life in the crash, while two others were seriously injured.

He died on April 30, just four days after his 39th birthday.

The dad of three was in the country to carry out relief work following a devastating cyclone.

Winds of 140mph had flattened villages and damaged thousands more homes.

Basharat worked for international relief charity Ummah Welfare Trust.

The Muslim charity helps rebuild the lives of victims of natural disaster and conflict.

Basharat leaves behind a wife and three young children – a daughter aged 12 and two sons aged nine and six.

Paying tribute to the 39-year-old, his brother Mujahid Hussain said: “Basharat was a selfless man. Humble, kind and generous with his time. He was always looking to see how best he could help serve the needs of others.

"He absolutely loved helping those less fortunate and working for Ummah Welfare Trust was a dream come true. Basharat never thought twice to help someone in need.”

Chairman of Ummah Welfare Trust, Mohammad Ahmad said: "He had a beautiful character and his passion was bringing smiles on the faces of orphans and widows all over the world. He sacrificed his life to bring happiness to others ensuring that people's hard earned money was reaching the most needy in Africa, Asia and all over the world.”

Basharat has worked in some dangerous circumstances during his career in international aid.

His work had taken him to Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia, Gambia, Togo, Benin and Sudan.

Last year, he flew out to Indonesia following a devastating earthquake which killed thousands.

In a blog post from the Indonesian island of Sulawesi in October, he spoke of the human impact of the tragedy.

"The horror and grief hasn’t left their faces and already they are facing a new problem," he wrote.

"The aftermath of such a destruction. Whilst we were conducting our distribution, men in protective suits covered from head to toe were spraying liquid around the disaster zone to try and stop any diseases from spreading.

"The recovery is only just beginning and it will be a long time before the area is back to its former state but with some help we can get there quicker. Like the lesson I’ve learnt from the people here, united together we can rebuild. United together we can gain strength and work for a better future."

His devastated family is determined to ensure his charitable work lives on.
