Tributes paid to popular Irish dad who 'died of a broken heart' after losing wife and son

Tributes have been paid to a dad from Co Cork who "died of a broken heart" earlier this week.

Greg Martin, 50s, passed away on Wednesday just five months after the tragic death of his son Anthony.

Greg's wife Maria sadly passed away seven years ago, and his sister Lisa Martin has told of how the popular Mayfield man died with a broken heart, Cork Beo reports.

Lisa said: "He was loved and adored by so many.

"All his stress is gone, sitting with the family and friends all the memories everyone has with him and all the funny things he did, all the great times, the jokes, the laughs he brought to everyone.

"I swear he was some legend that will never be forgotten, what a man.

"You were living a nightmare that you truly didn’t deserve, your heart broke and rest easy now with Ant until we meet again."

More thoughtful tributes have been paid to the very popular man in the Mayfield community on social media.

One friend wrote: "This was the news I never wanted to get. You've broken our hearts Greg. I hope you knew how loved you were by your family and friends near and far.

"Life has been hard on you my beautiful and now it's time to rest. Even in your hardest times you were the rock for everyone else. People like you only come along once in a lifetime and the world will be a sadder place without you. Your heart was pure and it was filled with love for everyone Greg, an absolutely beautiful soul."

Another added: "Beautiful man and you will live in my head forever my mate life is not right because a man like you should be in everyone’s life forever."

Mr Martin was laid to rest in St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Kilcully surrounded by a huge crowd of family and friends.

A post on RIP.ie reads: "Greg Martin, peacefully, with a broken heart, devoted dad to Jack, Marie and the late Anthony and Stephen, husband of the late Maria, loving son to Annie and Bob, dear brother of Anthony, Lorraine, Melissa, Lisa, Lindsey and adored granddad to Lexie. Sadly missed by his loving family, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, relatives and friends, both at home and abroad."
