Tributes paid to 'lovable rogue' Scots footballer after tragic sudden death

Tributes have been paid to a Scots footballer after his sudden death.

Donald Macphee, from Inverness, has been hailed as "a rock of a human being" and a "lovable rogue" after he tragically passed away this week.

The 34-year-old dad, known as DJ, was a popular figure in his home town and played football for his local team, Loch Ness FC.

The bricklayer's friends and family have been left totally devastated after the tragic news of his passing emerged on Thursday morning.

Tributes have flooded in and a spokesperson for Loch Ness FC told the Record: "Donald was a rock of a human being, he was a friend who managed to shine light on any situation no matter how dark.

"His infectious humour caught the attention of anyone he met and that is one of the reasons he was so well loved and by so many.

"He was the definition of 'a lovable rogue'. He could fill a dressing room on his own, ours will feel like it will always be missing something now.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time, we also would like to thank his family for raising such a good person and friend."

Donald was a former footballer at Inverness Athletic and both them and Loch Ness FC will hold a minute's applause when the North Caledonian League sides meet on Saturday.

There will also be a collection for local mental health charity, Mikeysline.

Donald participated in various sports and was a former member of the Highland Boxing Academy.

Following the news, his old club said the athlete helped "put them on the map".

In a post on Facebook, they said: "Very sad to wake and hear about the passing the clubs first ever champion Donald Macphee (DJ).

"DJ was pivotal in putting HBA on the map during our clubs first ever season (2011/12), where he boxed at all three stages of competition securing the Mens 64kg Scottish Novice Title at Meadowbank Stadium.

"Although DJ has not trained at the club for some years now his pictures and newspaper articles are still there to be seen on our walls of our gym.

"Having had only just spoke DJ on Saturday night at professional boxing show in Inverness this news has came as a shock to us all.

"On behalf of everyone at Highland Boxing Academy we would like to pass on our sincere condolences to his family and thank DJ one last time for representing the club so successfully and helping to put HBA on the boxing map. RIP."

DJ's heartbroken girlfriend Anya Dalton shared the tribute from the boxing club, with the message: "Forever a champ."

The pair had only just made their relationship Facebook official on Sunday.

On Thursday afternoon, another friend of DJ's said they had just spoken to him hours before they heard the news of his death.

Gavin MacColl said: "Donald Macphee, can’t believe I was only talking to u hours ago on the phone.

"Things are not going be same without our snapchats everyday or our phone calls. RIP."

Meanwhile, Sonia Tigwell said: "I'm in shock writing this. I can't get my head around it.

"R.I.P DJ Donald Macphee. The memories of the mad times as teenagers, you were a legend DJ and Inverness just will never be the same.

"My heartfelt condolences go out to your family and your beautiful children. Rest easy. GBNF."

Corran MacDonald added: "Such devastating news! Please speak to someone if you’re feeling low guys.

"Rest easy DJ lad, one of a kind."
