Tributes paid to Newmains United chairman following his sudden death

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to Newmains United chairman Ken Davies following his sudden death.

Ken, who was 69, passed away on Tuesday, leaving a "huge void" at Victoria Park.

In a statement, the club said: “Newmains United are shocked and saddened at the sudden passing of our chairman Ken Davies.

“Ken worked tirelessly to ensure the good running of things at Victoria Park.

“He was hugely respected across Lanarkshire and beyond following his safety officer work at clubs like Motherwell FC and Gretna.

“The proud Welshman – whose son Paul co-manages the team – was also a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

“After helping out at Newmains following his retirement, Ken took over as chairman in April 2020.

“Since then, he made the club his second home, transforming the clubhouse and pitch and ensuring the Covid return went to plan.

“It goes without saying he will be a massive loss and he leaves a huge void at the club.

“Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

Clubs across the West of Scotland Football League posted their own tributes to Ken.

Cambuslang Rangers tweeted: “Our sympathies and condolences are with everyone at @NewmainsUtdFC as well as Mr Ken Davies’ family & friends.

“A heartbreaking loss for all @OfficialWoSFL clubs who knew Ken.

“Our channels are open to all at Newmains should they need any support.”

Newmains’ near neighbours Carluke Rovers also posted: “Everyone at Carluke Rovers is deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Newmains United chairman Ken Davies.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to Paul, his son, the Newmains manager along with all the family and everyone connected to Newmains United at this difficult time.”

St Anthony’s added: “Condolences to all at @NewmainsUtdFC from everyone at the Ants.

“Ken was a lovely guy and our thoughts and prayers are with Ken’s family and friends at this sad time."
