Tributes paid to Manchester-born Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill who has died aged 64

Tributes are being paid to Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill after his death.

He was 64 and is said to have passed away after an illness.

Gill, also a respected producer, was a founding member of the post-punk band and tributes have been paid to his 'uncompromising artistic vision'.

Gang of Four bandmates John Sterry, Thomas McNeice and Tobias Humble announced the news in a statement on the band's social media channels - calling him 'a bit of a genius'.

They said Manchester-born Gill had been in hospital after a 'final tour'.

In the statement, the band said: "This is so hard for us to write, but our great friend and Supreme Leader has died today.

"Andy's final tour in November was the only way he was ever really going to bow out; with a Stratocaster around his neck, screaming with feedback and deafening the front row.

"His uncompromising artistic vision and commitment to the cause meant that he was still listening to mixes for the upcoming record, whilst planning the next tour from his hospital bed.

"But to us, he was our friend - and we’ll remember him for his kindness and generosity, his fearsome intelligence, bad jokes, mad stories and endless cups of Darjeeling tea.

"He just so happened to be a bit of a genius too.

"One of the best to ever do it, his influence on guitar music and the creative process was inspiring for us, as well as everyone who worked alongside him and listened to his music. And his albums and production work speak for themselves.

"Go give 'em a spin for him...

"Love you mate."

Gill formed Gang of Four in Leeds in 1976.

The band had 10 albums in total, including 'Entertainment' in 1979 and 'Solid Gold' a year later.

Entertainment was named in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.

Gang of Four's most popular singles included 'Damaged Goods', 'I Love a Man in Uniform' and 'At Home He's a Tourist'.

Gill also produced music for bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Stranglers, Michael Hutchence, Killing Joke, Therapy?, The Jesus Lizard and The Futureheads - with Gang of Four's sound also said to have influenced the likes of Nirvana and R.E.M.

No cause of death was given in the statement.
