A woman who died in a house fire in Cork over the weekend has been named locally.
Maureen O’Gorman, who was in her 70s, tragically passed away at her home in Silversprings Court in the Mayfield area of the city on Saturday evening.
Gardai and emergency services rushed to the scene at around 8pm but Ms O'Gorman was pronounced dead.
Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Tributes are being paid to the Cork woman following the freak incident.
One Mayfield resident said: "She was a lovely neighbour kept to herself but very genuine. RIP Maureen."
Another added: "She was a lovely lady always stopped to chat. RIP Maureen."
While John Maher, a Labour Party Councillor for Cork City North East, said on Sunday: "Very sad news this morning for the community, prayers and thoughts are with the woman, her family, friends and neighbours."
Gardai are investigating the tragic incident but foul play isn't suspected.
A spokesman said: "A woman in her 70s has died following a fire in a house at Silversprings Court in the Mayfield area of Cork city on Saturday 23 rd October, 2021.
"Gardaí and Fire Services were alerted to the incident shortly before 8pm. The sole occupant of the house, a woman in her 70s, was located inside the house by Fire Services personnel, but was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.
"The deceased has since been removed to the mortuary at Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out. The Coroner has been notified and the scene has been preserved for a technical and forensic examination.
"Gardaí from Mayfield are investigating the incident."
