Tributes paid to 'lovely lady' after horror Oban van crash

Tributes have been paid to an elderly woman who died after being hit by a van in Oban.

Dog lover Margaret Smith was struck by a Citroen Berlingo van as she walked in Soroba Road.

The 69-year-old was walking on the town’s Soroba Road at about 6.30pm yesterday when the tragedy happened.

Police have asked any witnesses to the incident, that happened last night at 6.30pm to come forward.

She was taken to Lorn and Islands Hospital in Oban but was pronounced dead a short time later.

The male driver of the Citroen was uninjured.

Locals who knew Margaret paid glowing tributes to her online.

One wrote: “So very sad to hear this news. Margaret was a lovely lady. Sending condolences to her family.”

Another said: “No words just heartbroken.”

While a third added: “So sorry to hear this, lovely lady, condolences to her family.”

Sergeant Alister Johnson of Road Policing in Glasgow said: “Our thoughts are with this woman's family and friends.

“We are carrying out enquiries to establish the full circumstances which led to this incident and would urge anyone who may be able to help to get in touch.

“In particular we would be keen to speak to anyone who may have dashcam footage from the area yesterday evening.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 2724 of 21 January, 2021.”
