Tributes paid to leading Scots lawyer Derek Ogg QC after tragic accident at home

Tributes have been paid to Scots legal giant Derek Ogg QC after his sudden death aged just 65.

The leading defence lawyer was found at his home in Glasgow by police officers at around 8.10pm on Friday, having suffered from a tragic accident.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Mr Ogg, who was appointed Crown Counsel in 2007, was highly respected throughout the profession and regarded as a pioneer for gay rights in Scotland.

The Faculty of Advocates said they are “deeply saddened” by Mr Ogg’s sudden passing and are sending their condolences to his friends and family.

Gordon Jackson QC, Dean of Faculty, said: "All of us who knew Derek Ogg are deeply saddened by his passing.

“He was a marvellous advocate but more than that he was a fierce campaigner for his beliefs both on a personal and professional level.

“He will be greatly missed by everyone at the Faculty."

Fellow advocate Niall McCluskey added: “Very sad to hear of the news of Derek Ogg QC's death.

“He was one of the best Criminal advocates of his generation and he had a unique and very creative approach to his work. He will be missed.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 8.10pm on Friday, the body of a 65-year-old man was discovered by officers within a flat at Rawcliffe Gardens, Langside, Glasgow.

“There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

"His family are aware.”
