Tributes paid to 'kind' husband found dead at Cheddar Gorge

Tributes have been paid to a "helpful and kind" husband who was found dead at Cheddar Gorge.

Philip Tovey, of Temple Cloud, was found dead at the foot of the gorge in a car park on Monday, February 10.

Police were called at 11.22am after the 65-year-old's body was found by a member of the public.

Somerset Live reports the inquest into his death has been unable to determine the circumstances leading up to the death.

The inquest held at Somerset Coroner's Court in Taunton last Wednesday (August 5) heard that police officers attempted to retrace Mr Tovey's footsteps at a later date.

However they were unable to complete the journey due to "strong winds" and "intermittent heavy rain" and as a result, could not determine the exact location of where he fell.

Detective Sergeant James Holdsworth confirmed there was nothing suspicious however and no need for further police involvement.

The inquest also heard Mr Tovey had a history of anxiety and depression and was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2003, but was judged to not to be at risk at his most recent mental health review.

The cause of death was recorded as multiple injuries as a result of falling down the gorge.

The coroner said: "We have no evidence that determines whether this was a deliberate act on his part or in some way accidental. It would be wrong for me to make a presumption that this was suicide.

"I will record that Philip Tovey died on February 10, 2020 at Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar from the cause of death given as one of multiple injuries.

"But I will provide a short narrative conclusion that on February 10, 2020, Philip Tovey was found at the foot of Cheddar Gorge, Cheddar with fatal multiple injures consistent with a fall but the circumstances of how he came to be at the foot of Cheddar Gorge were not established."

Paying tribute Mr Tovey's wife Julie said: "Philip loved his family, his three girls and a boy, he loved his dogs very much and his grandchildren.

"He looked after his parents who are both in their 90s. We do not know what happened that Monday morning - sadly I was in the hospital with our daughter.

"We all loved him very much and he was a character."
