Tributes paid to Inverness lecturer after climbing accident tragedy

A college principal has spoke of his "shock and sadness" after a lecturer died in a climbing accident.

Ewan Lyons was killed while climbing Beinn Dearg in the Torridon range near Ullapool in the Highlands at the weekend.

The keen climber and mountaineer was an Architectural Technology lecturer at Inverness College UHI.

College principal Professor Chris O'Neill said in a statement on Thursday: "It is with much shock and sadness that we pay tribute to our Architectural Technology lecturer Ewan Lyons, who lost his life in a climbing accident at Beinn Dearg, near Ullapool, last weekend."

He said Mr Lyons joined the college as a mature student in 2010, before becoming a lecturer.

Prof O'Neill added: "It was his experience as a student which gave Ewan a special affinity with his students. He was a hardworking and calm lecturer, widely respected by staff, students and the close-knit construction industry.

"He will be missed for his upbeat manner, bright conversations and his determination to always put the student experience first.

"In his spare time, Ewan loved venturing outdoors and he was an accomplished climber and hill walker. He had a particular interest in building conservation and enjoyed spending his summer months on the hillside repairing old bothies.

"He will be a massive loss to Inverness College UHI as well as the wider climbing and hill-walking community. Our thoughts are very much with his friends and family."
