Tributes paid to 'hell of a guy' Scots RAF hero who spent final months raising cash for others

Emotional tributes have been paid to a 'hell of a guy' Scots RAF hero after his tragic cancer death.

Gary Banford had launched a charity drive last July after he received the devastating news that his oesophageal cancer was inoperable.

The Macduff man lost his battle with the disease this month aged just 51.

The former Warrant Officer, who had recently retired, had served with the air force's Poseidon spy aircraft which are based out of RAF Lossiemouth in Moray.

Gary was popular in his community (Twitter)

Inspiring Gary had been told to keep fit after his diagnosis and set himself the challenge to do 50 reps of exercise a day for Elgin based cancer charity Abbie's Sparkle Foundation.

At the time of writing an incredible £25,262 has been donated from friends and well-wishers across the world for the small local cause.

Tributes have since poured in for the keen rugby player.

John Grindrod announced the death of his pal online.

He wrote: "Sadly I have to report my friend Gary Banford has passed away after an 18 month fight against cancer.

"He was the life and soul of the party. Never taking a backwards step on the rugby field, he was the epitome of the old adage that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, but the size of fight in the dog that counts!

"A true legend of RAF Rugby.

"In true Gary style he fought this awful disease with his usual determination, dignity and fight.

"Never one to give up, he took the challenge head on, but sadly he ran out of fight. My thoughts go out to his family at this extremely sad time, hopefully they know we the RAF Rugby family are here to support them in their time of need.

"I raise my glass to you Sir! "

Banff Rugby Club wrote on Facebook: "We at Banff Rugby Club - Scotland are sad to hear the passing of Gary. Our deepest condolences to all his friends and family.

"Gone but will certainly never be forgotten. "

Lorna Murray wrote: "Such a courageous man. Even in the hands of his illness he continued to think of others, raising money for charity in his usual inspirational way.

"Caring thoughts go especially to Selina, his wife and to his two young children and to his mum, Lorna and sister, Ashley and brother, Melvin and his many friends."

Karen MacLean wrote: "Heartbreaking news. He fought so very hard. A true inspiration. Thinking of all his family at this very sad time RIP Gary."

RAF Lossiemouth wrote online: "#TeamLossie is sad to announce that Master Aircrew Gary Banford, CXX Squadron, has lost his courageous battle with cancer on 15th July 2021.

"Gary served with distinction and pride over a 31 year career and our thoughts are very much with his much loved family and friends at this time.

"His passion for the Royal Air Force, his relentless pursuit of excellence in all he undertook and his commitment to fundraising for charities close to his heart means Gary was a well-known character on base and in the wider community. He earned the respect and admiration of all who knew him.

"His family have asked for privacy at this time but would ask that anyone wishing to make a donation in Gary’s memory to support Abbies Sparkle Foundation."

Before setting out on his epic fundraising journey, brave Gary revealed how he wanted to help others suffering from the terrible condition.

He wrote: "On the 16-Jul-2020, I was diagnosed with an Inoperable, Stage 4, Oesophageal Cancer. This cancer has already spread to my stomach and my lungs.

"One of the many tips my Oncologist told me was to stay fit... I told him 'I do CrossFit', he rolled his eyes.

"That day I decided I would stay as fit as I possibly could and that I would drag my family, friends and people who had never met me (my new friends) on this journey with me.

"I'll help you all get a little fitter and you'll all help me mentally with my Fight Against Cancer.

"So, here we are - 50 Reps of a given exercise everyday until I've beaten this, I will also throw the occasional curve ball to keep you all on your toes.

"Abbies Sparkle Foundation, stepped in very early to help my family and me, so I feel it only right to return the favour and maybe help some others suffering from this dreadful disease."

Donations have continued to pour in after his tragic death last week.

One person donating £50 wrote: "You were one hell of a guy Gary. Rest easy. Thinking of you and your family."

Abbie's Sparkle Foundation has been contacted for comment.
