Tributes paid to 'hard-working' young man killed in horror Sligo crash

Tributes are flooding in for Shane Flanagan, a 22-year-old Sligo man killed in a tragic car crash last night.

Locals have offered their condolences to the Flanagan family after the "popular" young man died in a collision minutes from his home.

It's understood Shane was on his way home from Centra, where he worked, when the incident took place on a "very dangerous stretch of road."

Tragically, it's understood the crash took place three or four minutes from the family home, in a collision with a jeep.

The youngest of three siblings, Shane was "well thought of" in the local community – and his death has been described as a "terrible shock to the area" by Cllr Thomas Walsh.

"The area is in a lot of shock," he told the Irish Mirror.

"The family would be very well known – Shane, Angela and Paul – and the thoughts of the community are with them at the current time.

"It's just a shock to the whole county – no-one expects these things to happen."

Cllr Tom Fox, another councillor in the area, said the community is "devastated by the news of Shane's tragic death."

He told the Irish Mirror: "Shane was very highly thought of in the community.

"He was a hard-working young man, and he was very active in the community.

"His death at such a young age is a tragic loss to his family and to the community."

A death notice, posted on Rip.ie, saw dozens of messages of support pour in for the family.

Shane is survived by his parents Patsy and Teresa, brother Paul and sister Angela – as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, nephews Lee and Callum, relatives and friends.

Because of Covid-19 guidelines, Shane's funeral will be private to family only.

Cllr Walsh added: "Covid makes it very difficult for the funeral, because I know there's so many people that would want to pay their respects.

"The community is fully behind the family, and our thoughts are with them."
