Tributes paid to 'great guy' cyclist killed in horror accident

A cyclist who died in a horror road smash has been named by police.

Colin McCourt was declared dead at the scene of Tuesday’s accident near Cardross, Helensburgh.

A number of people stopped to help the 40-year-old, from Dumbarton, but tragically, nothing could be done.

A 44-year-old man was been arrested and charged in connection with road traffic offences and appeared in court today.

Friends and colleagues paid online tributes to Mr McCourt, who was a mechanical engineer.

One wrote: “Just heard what happened what a loss. Was a great guy. My thoughts go out to his family.”

Another said: “That's sad news, thoughts with his family. Another one of the good guys gone.”

While a third colleague added: “I read the article earlier but it didn’t have a name, so sad and so young was such a lovely guy as well, thinking of use all.”

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Around 4.40pm, police received a report of a road traffic collision involving a cyclist and a car on the A814, half a mile west of Cardross.

“Emergency services attended and the 40-year-old male cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He can be named as Colin McCourt from Dumbarton.

“Officers are appealing for any witnesses to the incident. 

“A number of vehicles stopped to provide assistance and police are asking any of those witnesses, who have yet to speak to police, to contact them.

“In particular, officers are appealing for anyone with dash cam to check their footage as it may have captured footage which could assist our enquiries.”

The spokesman confirmed the road was closed for several hours as crash scene investigators conducted enquiries. 

He said a 44-year-old man was arrested in connection with road traffic offences and appeared at Dumbarton Sheriff Court on Wednesday, 11 November, 2020.
