Tributes paid to girl, 17, who caught mumps in Spain and died from complications

Tribute have been paid to a 17-year-old girl who died after catching mumps on a Spanish holiday.

Molly Bower, from Sherburn Hill, near Durham, fell ill when she was in Majorca and passed away as a result of complications from the infection on Friday.

A fundraising campaign has now been launched in a bid to bring her body back to the UK.

Her aunt Dominique Bower, who is still in Spain, wrote on the GoFundMe page: “Tragically Molly died... through complications of an illness due to mumps.

The 17-year-old's family are raising money to bring her body back home (Go Fund Me)

"To bring our baby girl home it’s going to cost us £5,000. I’m asking for a small donation or anything that you can to do help. Please, please, please get my beautiful baby home.”

More than £9,500 has already been donated to the page, which was set up two days ago, smashing the £5,000 target.

Friend Melissa Clarke wrote on Facebook: "RIP Molly Patterson you absolute beautiful soul!

"I can't believe it. Knew you since been a little nipper and you've always had a heart of gold girl...

"So sad knowing you're gone but you will never be forgotten! You don't realise how loved you actually are, everyone is well and truly devastated.

"Have not stopped thinking about this all night god bless you, sleep tight angel forever in our hearts thinking of all family and friends at such a sad time."

Tamzin Burnham said: “You were a fabulous friend and I will cherish our memories. I’m heartbroken.”

Emma French added: "This is such heartbreaking news.

"Molly was a lovely girl with a huge heart and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to know her and see her grow into the young lady she was.

"Let's get her home and give her the send off she deserves."

Mumps is a contagious infection which spreads through drops of infected saliva being inhaled of picked up off surfaces.

The infection can lead to viral meningitis and other complications, the NHS says.
