Tributes paid to former RTE pundit and PE coach David Weldrick who died in drowning tragedy in Co Clare

Tributes have been paid to former Sunday Game pundit and PE coach David Weldrick who died in a tragic drowning accident over the weekend.

David, 71, was swimming in Kilkee Bay in Co Clare when he was reported to get into difficulty shortly after 10am on Saturday.

He was pulled from the water by emergency services and was airlifted directly to University Hospital Limerick where he later died.

David was well-known for his work as a lecturer at the University of Limerick, as well as for briefly appearing as a pundit on RTE's The Sunday Game.

And tributes have come pouring in for the immensely popular teacher since the tragedy.

University of Limerick wrote: "Very sad news. Condolences to all of Dave’s family, friends and former colleagues. He leaves behind a legacy of coaching excellence at UL. RIP."

Meanwhile local football club Limerick FC wrote on Facebook: "We wish to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Limerick Referee David Weldrick who died in a tragic drowning incident today in Kilkee.

"Limerick FC Women will hold a minutes silence at our game v Peamount in the Markets Field.

"May He Rest In Peace."

The Physical Education Association of Ireland also paid tribute to the former coach.

A spokesman wrote: "It is with great sadness that the PEAI learned of the passing of David Weldrick.

"David was an eminent coach and educator having served as one of the country’s most well-known PE teachers and lecturer at University of Limerick for four decades.

"David served as an inspiration for many in our profession and his loss will be felt by many. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

"RIP David and thank you from all in the PEAI."
