Tributes paid to former Bolton Mayor Guy Harkin

Tributes have been paid to a former Bolton Mayor who passed away at the weekend.

Guy Harkin was first elected councillor in 1980 and represented the communities of Daubhill and Crompton for almost 40 years.

During his time in office, he is said to have 'brought humour and wit to the council chamber'.

The keen walker stepped down from the post in May last year, and was made an Honorary Alderman several months later in recognition of his decades of service.

Paying tribute to Ald Harkin, Bolton Council leader Coun David Greenhalgh said he had a natural presence that 'couldn't be taught'.

He said: "Guy was respected across all parties as a fine orator, and talented politician.

"A former mayor, he represented the communities of Daubhill and Crompton as a councillor for nearly 40 years.

"Guy was made an Honorary Alderman in August last year in recognition of his decades of service.

"He brought humour and wit to the Council Chamber as well as considerable political expertise and knowledge.

"His anecdotes, which would have people in stitches, were legendary, but so were his attacks on his opponents.

"When Guy Harkin spoke, you may not always have agreed with it, but you listened. He had a natural presence that you can’t be taught.

"On behalf of the whole Council, our condolences to Colette and the family."

As well as councillor and Mayor, Ald Harkin also served as deputy leader of the council for 21 years, as well as chairman and vice-chairman on the Greater Manchester Transport and Chairman of North West Employers.
