Local councillor Marie Casserly said: “I would like to extend my sympathies to her family and friends at this sad time.”

The woman was also honoured at a mass in the Parish of Ahamlish, which includes the villages of Cliffoney, Grange and Mullaghmore, on Wednesday morning.

Members of the community have shared their condolences on social media with many offering sympathies to both the victim and the driver.

One said: “Oh sorry to hear that. It is very difficult to walk at present and country roads are so dark.

“May her gentle soul Rest in Peace also the driver of the car who must be in deep shock. Very sad for the families of both. Prayers offered."

“So sad. May she rest in peace,” another said.
