Tributes paid to F1 legend Niki Lauda following his death, aged 70

Three-time Formula 1 champion, Niki Lauda, died on Monday at the age of 70.

In a statement from his family, they said Lauda died "peacefully" and was surrounded by loved ones.

The Austrian race car driver took the Ferrari titles in 1975 and 1977, and won his third title for McLauren in 1984.

Although a three-time champion, he is widely remembered for his miraculous recovery and return to the profession after suffering severe burns in a horror crash at the 1976 German Grand Prix.

Professional racing bodies, sports stars, and fans have shared tributes of the late Formula 1 "hero".

Mercedes described Lauda as "irreplaceable" and his passing "leaves a void in Formula 1".

The Embassy of Austria named him a "hero to many" while the Formula 1 team said that Lauda is "forever carried in our hearts".

McLauren says Lauda will be "enshrined in our history" and Ferrari is "deeply saddened" by his death.

Fellow F1 drivers took to Twitter to say a few words to pay their respects to the renowned racing driver:

Lauda was born in Vienna in February 1949 before becoming a motor racing legend. Following his retirement from the sport, he went on to become a successful businessman - owning his own airline and more recently, a non-executive chairman for the Formula 1 Mercedes team.

Younger fans may well know the household name after Rush, a film highlighting the rivalry between Lauda and British Formula 1 driver James Hunt during the 1976 motor-racing season, which was released in 2013.

In Lauda's later years, he was overcome with ill health and underwent a lung transplant in August 2018. Earlier this year, Lauda spent 10 days in hospital while suffering from influenza.
