Tributes paid to Cork man Larry Desmond after tragic car accident

Tributes have been paid to Cork man Larry Desmond after his death in a car accident on Monday.

Mr Desmond, aged in his 80s, was reported missing by his family early on Monday but was later found to have died in a single vehicle crash in the village of Aherla.

Friends and locals have been paying tribute to the well-known former haulage contractor after his sad passing, Cork Beo reports.

One of Larry's daughters posted on Facebook: "Dad was found, unfortunately it's devastating news, he was killed in a car accident.

"We are all just devastated as a family, he was our papa Joe and our hero xxx - but he is with the love of his life now, our beautiful mum."

Many friends of the family offered their condolences to all his children and close relatives describing him as a "gentleman".

A post on RIP.ie reads: "Beloved husband of the late Olive, Aherla Beg and dear father of Caroline, Michael, Damien, Laura and Paula, beloved son of the late Mary, and brother of the late Sr. Mary Monica.

"Sadly missed by his loving family, sons-in-law Peter and Garry, daughters-in-law Kathy and Yvonne, grandchildren Elizabeth, Keith, Nickki, Mary, Darren, Katie, Emma, Shannon, Sarah-Lee, Brian, Katie, Damien, Max, Ryan, James, Georgina, Chloe and Becky, great-grandchildren, cousins especially Sheila, neighbours and many friends."

Requiem Mass will take place on Saturday at noon in St. Joseph's Church, Cloughduv with funeral afterwards to St. Finbarr's Cemetery, Kilmurry.

Gardai are continuing to appeal for any witnesses who may have been in the area on Monday and may have dashcam footage.

A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users who travelled in the area between 9pm on 16/12/19 - 2:30am on 17/12/19 who may have dash cam footage, to contact Gardaí in Macroom on 026 20590 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."
