Tributes paid to camogie manager with 'beautiful manner' after sudden death at county final

Tributes have poured in for "great camogie man" Richie O'Donnell following his sudden death on Sunday.

The Kildalkey Camogie manager fell ill at Clann na nGael GAA ground before the kick-off of the Intermediate County Final between his side and Trim.

Medical personnel and nurses in attendance at the game rushed to Richie's aid as they waited for the arrival of emergency services, but sadly he passed away a short time later.

Kildalkey Hurling and Camogie Club took to Facebook to pay tribute to the "great camogie man".

It said: "Richie, when joining us at Kildalkey, you could never have known the impact you made at our first day at the gym.

"Your knowledge of the game was immense and you were able to communicate it to us with a beautiful manner. You made it your goal to get to know every member of the team and soon learned our strengths and weaknesses.

"We will be forever grateful for your advice, support, encouragement and commitment.

"One piece of advice you gave us will remain with us forever: 'At the end of the day, this match will not define you as a person, life goes on, you go out and enjoy it. Win or lose, there's always the next ball'.

"Kildalkey Hurling and Camogie Club wish to express our deepest sympathy to Caroline, Holly and Abi for their loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and club members at this very sad time.

"We would like to thank the nurses on scene, first responders and emergency services who responded promptly and professionally to assist. We are thankful to Meath Camogie County Board, Clann na nGael, Trim and Donaghmore-Ashbourne for their assistance at this difficult time."

Clann na nGael GAA club also offered up their sympathies after the sudden passing.

It said: "Clann na nGael would like to extend our deepest sympathies to the Kildalkey Camogie team, Ashbourne GAA and the family of Richie O'Donnell. From what we hear from the Clann na nGael girls who played Meath Camogie under Richie's management, he was a gent, a man with passion for camogie. We would like to thank the Kildalkey and Trim supporters for their patience, and the stewards, and the first responders for their help.

“Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam”.

Others remembered Richie as a fantastic manager with a passion for sports.

One person wrote: "Thought and prayers with Richie's family. May they find the comfort and support in each other to help through this very difficult time. May Richie Rest In Peace".

"Very sad. May Richie Rest In Peace. Thinking of his poor family, friends and Kildalkey camogie squad at this time," commented a second.

While a third wrote: "Thoughts and prayers with Richies family at this sad time. A great Camogie man. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”
