Tributes paid to 'bubbly, popular' footballer Liam Scott

Tributes have been paid to a “bubbly and popular" former Hamilton Accies player after his tragic death.

Liam Scott, who also played for Bellshill Athletic, passed away after falling into the water by the Falls of Clyde near Lanark on Thursday evening. The 18-year-old's body was recovered the following morning.

Striker Scott, who lived in Motherwell, was with Hamilton Accies for a number of years but left for Bellshill last summer.

Former Hamilton Accies secretary Scott Struthers said: “Liam was in our Academy for years. He was a good wee guy; like many youth academy players, some progress, some don’t, but Liam left us after about five or six seasons.

“I would have called him a friendly, bubbly wee guy, a popular wee player. He was the kind of player I like, and he was with us with the team that won the under-17s tournament in France a couple of years ago.

“It’s dreadfully sad.”

Hamilton Accies also paid tribute to the player on their social media channels.

A statement read: “The club are dreadfully sad to learn of the untimely passing of Bellshill Athletic player Liam Smith, 18, who was in our Academy for six years before leaving last summer.

“He tragically died on Thursday evening. Our thoughts are with his family and friends just now.”

A statement issued by Bellshill Athletic read: “Everyone at the club were devastated to hear the news of the tragic accident which has claimed such a long life.

“Liam Scott had such an impact on and off the field. Thoughts and prayers are with Willie, Pauline, Lara, Harry and family and friends. Rest in peace.”
