Tributes paid to Brian Black as ex TV presenter dies after car plunges into harbour

Tributes have been paid to former TV presenter Brian Black, who has died after his car plunged into the water at a harbour.

Emergency services were called to Strangford Harbour, in Co Down, Northern Ireland following reports a car had gone into the water.

Earlier today, Mr Black was pulled from the water and taken to hospital by ambulance, but died from injuries.

Following the tragic news, tributes have been paid to Mr Black by many of his former colleagues.

UTV's Garry Kelly tweeted to say that he had been left 'devastated' by the loss.

"I am devastated to learn of the tragic death of my former UTV colleague Brian Black. May he rest in peace," wrote Mr Kelly.

Photographer Kevin McAuley shared to social media: "Very sad news breaking about Brian Black he was one of a kind great environmentalist, programme maker and presenter.

"What a sad way to go. I worked long side Brian on many shoots in North Antrim Fair Head and Rathlin Island. Brian RIP."

After Mr Black's car plunged into the harbour on Tuesday, Northern Ireland's Fire and Rescue Service, Ambulance Service, Coastguard and Royal National Lifeboat Institution came together for the rescue mission.

Video footage and photos from the scene appear to show a car being lifted out of the water.

A spokesperson for the RNLI told the Belfast Telegraph "Portaferry RNLI’s inshore lifeboat was requested to launch at 11.30am this morning by Belfast Coastguard following a report of a car in the water.

"Portaferry RNLI and Portaferry Coastguard recovered a casualty from the water who was subsequently transferred to hospital.

" A search is ongoing to ensure no other casualties are involved."

A male was then reported to have been brought to Royal Victoria Hospital by road ambulance.
